Smash cake sessions are one of my favorite ways to celebrate a baby’s first birthday — they’re fun, messy, full of personality, and always result in the sweetest memories. If you’ve never done one before, you might be wondering what actually happens during a smash cake session. Don’t worry — I guide you through the entire process from start to finish.
Here’s exactly what you can expect when you book a smash cake session with me.
We Start With Family Photos
If you choose to include family photos, we always start there — and for good reason. Babies are usually happiest and cleanest at the beginning of the session, making it the perfect time to capture those timeless family moments.
This part of the session includes:
- Baby with parents
- Sibling photos (if applicable)
- A few individual baby portraits
These images are perfect for albums, wall art, and gifts for grandparents. Once we’ve captured those classic, clean shots, we move into the fun stuff.
Baby-Only Portraits
Next, I focus on just your baby. This is where their personality really starts to shine. Whether they’re full of smiles, serious expressions, or curious looks, these portraits capture your baby exactly as they are at this stage.
This portion allows baby a little time to warm up to the studio and get comfortable before the cake comes out.
The Smash Cake Moment
Now for the part everyone waits for — the cake smash!
Once baby is settled, we bring out the cake and let them explore at their own pace. Some babies dive right in, while others take their time with gentle pokes or curious tastes. Both are completely normal — and both photograph beautifully.
There’s no pressure for your baby to “perform.” The goal isn’t perfection, it’s capturing authentic reactions, expressions, and those adorable messy moments that make first birthdays so special.
Mini Bath & Cleanup Photos
We finish the session with a mini bath, which is often a parent favorite. This allows your baby to splash, play, and clean up a bit while I capture some of the cutest photos of the entire session.
These images are:
- Fun and playful
- Great for variety in your final gallery
- A sweet way to end the experience
Plus, it makes cleanup much easier before you head home.
