Owatonna MN Newborn Photographer
Planning your newborn session is such an exciting part of welcoming your little one — but figuring out what everyone should wear can feel like a big question mark. Whether you’re coming into my cozy Owatonna, MN studio or I’m visiting your home for a lifestyle session, I’m here to make styling your session simple and stress-free.
Here's a guide to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you — while keeping the focus right where it should be: your sweet new baby.
For Mom: Soft, Simple & Comfortable
Mama, this is your time to shine — and feel confident doing it. I have a curated client closet of gowns available for you to wear during your newborn session. These gowns are bump- and postpartum-friendly, flattering, and flowy (read: perfect for cuddling baby). Soft neutrals, pastels, and earth tones photograph best and bring a timeless feel to your images.
Not sure what to choose? I’m always happy to show you options ahead of time so you can pick what feels best.
For Dad: Keep It Classic
Solid colors work best for dads — think light gray, cream, olive, navy, or tan. A basic henley, sweater, or button-up pairs well with jeans or chinos. Try to avoid large logos, loud patterns, or neon colors. Simplicity keeps the focus on your connection as a family and ensures a cohesive gallery.
For Siblings: Sweet and Simple
If big sister is joining the session, I have some darling little girl outfits available in studio to make her feel extra special. For both boys and girls, I recommend soft, solid colors or simple patterns that won’t clash with the rest of the family. And if you’re at home, let them stay barefoot — it adds a cozy, natural touch.
Need a little help getting siblings engaged during the session? Don’t worry — I’ve got tricks for that, too.
Color Palette Tips
Here are some go-to color combos that always look amazing:
- Cream, tan, and sage green
- Soft blue, white, and gray
- Blush pink, oatmeal, and ivory
- Dusty rose, taupe, and light brown
Whether we’re shooting in your living room with natural light or in my studio with styled backdrops, these tones keep everything cohesive and dreamy.
A Few Bonus Tips:
- Coordinate, don’t match: You don’t need to be in matching outfits! Just stick to a shared palette and complementary tones.
- Think texture: Knits, lace, linen, and soft cotton photograph beautifully.
- Keep it timeless: Avoid super trendy patterns that may date the photos later.
- Bring backup: Especially for baby — messes happen, and that’s okay!
