Owatonna Minnesota Newborn Photographer

As a newborn photographer, I often get asked, “Is it too late to book a session if my baby is over two weeks old?” The short answer? Absolutely not.

While the ideal window for newborn photos is typically within the first 14 days of life, life doesn’t always go according to plan—and that’s okay! I’ve photographed babies as young as a few days old, all the way up to 7 weeks, and even NICU graduates up to 3 months old. Each baby is unique, and their story deserves to be captured beautifully, no matter the timeline.

Why the First Two Weeks Are Ideal

During those first couple of weeks, babies are generally sleepier, more flexible, and still curled up in those sweet, womb-like poses. This makes it easier to capture the cozy, snuggly images so many parents love. Their skin is often clearer in the first days, and feeding schedules (even if a bit unpredictable!) tend to allow for easier transitions between poses.

But Here’s the Truth…

Not every baby arrives home right away. Some need extra time in the NICU, some families need time to settle in, and sometimes—life just gets busy. And that’s perfectly normal. Your baby is still beautiful, still perfect, and still deserves to be documented.

I’ve had the absolute honor of photographing babies well past that two-week mark, including:

  • Full-term babies at 5, 6, and even 7 weeks
  • NICU babies who came in for their sessions at 8, 10, or even 12 weeks old

While sessions with older babies may look a bit different—fewer sleepy poses and more awake moments—they are just as meaningful. We may capture more eye contact, expressions, or snuggles in your arms. Every stage has its own kind of magic.

What to Expect with Older Newborns

If your baby is older than two weeks, here’s what you can expect from your session:

  • A more flexible, baby-led approach
  • A focus on wrapped poses or natural lifestyle-style images
  • Sweet awake shots, eye contact, and even a few little smirks
  • A calm, relaxed experience where we go with the flow and work with your baby’s rhythm

At the end of the day, the most important thing is documenting your little one’s beginning—whether that’s at 6 days, 6 weeks, or 3 months. You won’t regret capturing these fleeting moments, no matter when it happens.

So if your baby is a little older, don’t stress—it’s never too late for newborn photos. Reach out, and let’s chat about how we can create something beautiful together.
