Owatonna Minnesota Family Photographer
Planning your family photo session in Owatonna, MN? One of the most common questions I get is: "What should we wear?" Choosing outfits that look great on camera and feel like you can make all the difference in how your photos turn out. Here are my top tips to help you feel confident and coordinated for your session:
1. Start with a Color Palette
Choose 2–3 main colors and mix in some neutrals. Soft earthy tones, jewel tones, or warm neutrals photograph beautifully year-round. Think sage green, cream, rust, navy, or mustard.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Mix textures and layers using your color palette. For example, if Mom wears a patterned dress with muted tones, Dad could wear a solid henley in one of the colors from her dress.
3. Textures & Layers Add Dimension
Knit sweaters, denim jackets, tulle skirts, and linen dresses add visual interest. Layers also help if the weather shifts during your session—especially here in Minnesota!
4. Keep It Timeless
Trendy pieces can quickly date your photos. Opt for simple, classic silhouettes you’ll still love 10 years from now.
5. Avoid Logos & Neon
Logos can be distracting, and neon colors often reflect weirdly on skin. Stick to solids or subtle patterns that don’t compete with faces.
6. Comfort is Key
Make sure everyone feels comfortable in their clothes—especially kids! If they’re tugging, scratching, or too hot/cold, it’ll show in the photos.
